What is Kettlebell?

The kettlebell or girya (Russian: гиря) is a cast iron weight looking somewhat like a cannonball with a handle.  Kettlebell workouts are intended to incrase strength, endurance, agility and balance, challenging both the muscular and cardiovascular system with dynamic, total-body movements.

In recent years, kettlebells have become popular among athletes, especially mixed martial artists and those in the entertainment community.

Benefits of kettlebell training

Kettlebell training is quickly becoming a hot new trend in fitness. Professional athletes, Hollywood Stars, and martial artists are all integrating kettlebell exercises into their training. Anyone who places a high value on fitness and health but does not have the time to spend hours at the gym is a candidate for kettlebell training.

Here are eight benefits of kettlebell training.

1. Kettlebell strength transfers easily from the gym to the real world

With kettlebells you can regain control of your body. You will learn safe lifting techniques and with practice, they become unconscious to you. You can confidently perform activities like carrying groceries, picking up children, placing luggage in overhead compartments, and even shoveling snow. With kettlebells, you will train movements, not body parts, increasing your coordination and balance.

2. Learn reliance on and control of the powerhouse of your body, your hips

Knee and back health are both dependent on strong, mobile hips. Most untrained people overuse their lower back muscles and hamstrings when lifting objects. The hips are the true key to core power. Instead of sitting on your backside letting it atrophy, you can strengthen it with exercises like the kettlebell swing, snatch and squat.

3. Build strong hands and forearms

You can't lift what you can't hold onto so your hands are key to overall strength. The size of the handles, offset center of gravity and forces generated by ballistic kettlebell exercises create a crushing grip. High repetition swings and snatches will not only strengthen your heart but your hands as well.

4. Develop rotational power without twisting your spine

One arm ballistic exercises like the kettlebell swing and snatch force your core muscles to resist rotation thereby strengthening muscles you would use for golf or baseball swings without risking injury by twisting your back.

5. Learn how to root into the ground and eliminate power leaks in your body

High tension exercises like the military press, single leg dead lift, squat and get-up train you to connect with the ground and stack your joints on top of each other for the ultimate in stability and strength.

6. Save time

Kettlebells increase strength and endurance within the same short session. Training sessions include multi-joint movements engaging many muscles at once. Most traditional cardiovascular exercise only use half of your body, kettlebell swings and snatches use both your upper and lower body creating an incomparable cardiovascular workout.

7. Improve your posture and balance

Kettlebell exercises place a strong emphasis on your posterior chain helping you stand taller. Learn how to align your shoulders over your hips, knees, and ankles to stand stress-free. You will also become stronger in two legged, one legged and split stances increasing your balance and reducing risk of injury.

8. It's fun

Just try it and you will see.
